When it comes to Valentine’s Day plans these days, it’s tricky to find a happy medium between the “100 red roses, full spa package and string quartet” option and the one where you’re both so exasperated by the bombardment of red hearts and ridiculous bears, that you opt to stay on the couch with pizza.
We have three easy ways to spoil your significant other that will not only show your love and appreciation for one another, but will also allow you to have fun and reconnect.
Strictly come dancing
If you’re a couple who enjoys the vibrant energy of jazz performances, The Crypt, located in the city centre’s historic St George’s Cathedral, is a must-visit. Take off for the weekend
Since Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday this year, the opportunity is ripe for a weekend away. With the weather so beautifully temperate here in the Cape, you can choose to spend it along the coast or in the Winelands. Both locations are ideal for couples to enjoy quality time with each other amidst romantic landscapes and the best in food, wine and activities. On the Sunday, make sure to organise a breath taking stroll or drive, and then share a wonderful meal together. For those wanting a Winelands escape, Somerset West is a short drive from the city and Southern Suburbs, with notable vineyards including Lourensford and Waterkloof Estate. Fish Hoek, Simonstown and St James are the ideal seaside escapes with holiday accommodation close to home, where you can enjoy delicious seafood, quirky stores and amazing hiking and walking trails.

Picnic with your paramour
Instead of being cooped up in a restaurant with an overpriced Valentine’s Day menu, you can embark on a gourmet picnic date. It’s completely up to you what’s on the menu, although you can never go wrong with these treats:
- A hard cheese, a blue cheese, a soft cheese and herb cream cheese
- A selection of deli meats like salami, prosciutto and pancetta
- Fruits to go with the cheese like grapes, pear and figs
- A bottle of bubbly and a summery white wine
- Readymade roast chicken and salad.
